TEAM OF THE WEEK: Season Ten, Round One - March 2
ANDRE COOK
Team: Rutherford
Result: Rutherford 7 def. Cooks Hill 0.
Why: Andre Cook has been a long term player in the Newcastle Dodgeball League, renowned for his over-the-line eliminations and 'shotgun' tactics. This week he was a key player in the lock-out victory for Rutherford in the debut in the league, and with Cooks Hill a team that has made a number of grand final appearances, any performance that shuts them down is worthy of praise.
First appearance in the Team of the Week.
NIC PRICE
Team: Belmont
Result: Belmont 9 def. Raymond Terrace 7.
Why: Belmont made a recovery late in the match to save a 2-5 deficit and turn it into a 9-7 win - much of that recovery can be attributed to Belmont's founding captain, Nic Price. As well as a number of catches and a handful of eliminations, the team's campaign starting on the front foot with two points can be credited to his guiding of the ship.
First appearance in the Team of the Week.
PETER GOLDTHORPE
Team: Raymond Terrace
Result: Belmont 9 def. Raymond Terrace 7.
Why: Although Raymond Terrace eventually fell to Belmont by two points, the opening seven rounds of the match saw them take 5 points, and most of those wins were off the back of captain Peter Goldthorpe's league-leading dodge statistics. Braving the Belmont forwards' shots from the line, Goldthorpe drew enough pressure for his team to take control of the game early, even if it came unravelled late.
First appearance in the Team of the Week.
JAKUB LUNARZEWSKI
Team: Waratah
Result: Hamilton 6 drew. Waratah 6.
Why: Jakub Lunarzewski was absent from the league in the past two seasons, so his return to the ranks of the Waratah squad was closely watched by both sides, but it was to Hamilton's disappointment that he returned with forms of old. His on-line dodging and two round-ending eliminations made sure Waratah stayed in the early rounds long enough to claim a point from the 6-all draw.
First appearance in the Team of the Week.
EVA BAILEY
Team: Waratah
Result: Hamilton 6 drew. Waratah 6.
Why: The Hamilton-Waratah classic has spanned all ten seasons of the Newcastle Dodgeball League, and Eva Bailey has been a key player for Waratah in nine of those ten seasons. Now, in it's deca-celebration, Bailey put in a performance worthy of the Team of the Week, with a series of vital catches in the dying rounds of the clash guaranteeing the 'Tahs would walk away with a point from the match.
First appearance in the Team of the Week.
LEWIS FOOT
Team: Hamilton
Result: Hamilton 6 drew. Waratah 6.
Why: The Hamilton-Waratah classic is one of the blockbuster matches of the Newcastle Dodgeball League, so when any player picks up 5 eliminations in one match people take notice - Foot managed to do it when he was the last player on the field for the defending premiers. Also added a number of catches early in the match to confirm his place in the Team of the Week.
