Know the rules

Played dodgeball in high school? That’s a great start, but this isn’t Friday afternoon PE class. As a new player you’ll be itching to get out there so you’d hate to be called out for stepping into the no-contact zone or not getting behind the attack line…make sure you are all over the rules – check out the Rules of Dodgeball and become a dodging superstar!


Stay on your toes

The reason we love dodgeball is that the action is non-stop. Balls can come from anywhere in front of you so stay alert! Peripheral vision is critical and you need to be ready for anything.


Hug the corners

In the centre of the court you are most exposed, especially the closer you get to the centreline. By staying off to the side, you minimise the area you have to scan for incoming balls.


Accuracy, not power

Make your throws count! If you don’t have the arm of a baseball pitcher, use timing to catch an opponent off-guard. Aim at their legs to reduce the chance of having your throw caught.  Sneak towards the centreline without being noticed or hide a ball behind your back and unleash at the right moment.


Pass the balls

Remember, dodgeball is a team sport – you can’t carry all 6 balls by yourself. So spread them around! Make sure your team-mates have ammo and launch an attack together.


Block!

The balls are not only an offensive weapon – use them to their full potential and smash incoming throws away until the time is right for you to launch an attack of your own.


Keep Moving 
Never give up, never stop! No matter how many balls they throw at you, just keep on moving…


Work as a team

Not everyone has a cannon arm or lightning pace. Each player in your team should have a role, and there are plenty! Catcher, thrower, decoy, hiker (see the strategies page), human shield, the list goes on. Communicate with your team-mates and work out how you can contribute best.
